CHARACTER

Name: Selena Garetson

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Symbol:
Symbol:

Occupation: Con Artist

Appearance: It was obvious to Selena from a young age that she was blessed with good looks and she does nothing to hide the fact that she is exceptionally proud of the fact. She keeps her fiery red hair tied back in a short ponytail that reaches down to the back of her neck. Full bangs are kept out of the ponytail to frame her oval shaped face and draw more attention to her bright violet eyes, small nose, and lush lips. She wears a white sleeveless tunic with blue trimming along the edges that hugs her voluptuous body. It comes down to her waist  where it becomes a long slender skirt with a slit up the side. She also wears a pair of boot that match her tunic. Selena usually walks and talks with a great deal of confidence in herself, to the point where she seems smug and full of herself. A fact that is not helped by the ever constant smirk on her lips. She stands at a fairly average 5' 8".

History: For the vast part of her life, Selena had a fairly standard home environment and childhood. She had two parents who were affectionate and attentive, an older brother that she got along with usually, and a house in the rural area of the agricultural district of Vale. Their family was never very well off, but they lived comfortably enough off of their parents' wages and the side projects they performed such as tool repair, hunting and trapping, and the small farm they maintained for themselves.

As Selena grew up, she surrounded herself with stories of the exploits of Huntresses. She was enamored with the fame, respect, and attention they drew. While fighting wasn't something she had a strong passion for, she loved the idea of using her wits to hunt down and stop Grimm before they got into the city or hurt anyone. And the fact that it let her help people was a nice bonus. Through frugal living and hard work on everyone's part, the Garetson household eventually scraped enough money together to send both she and her brother Piers to Signal Academy. The creative thinking required to live comfortably in the countryside that Selena learned aided her well in school, allowing her to excel at her studies and bookwork.

Living outside of the agricultural district exposed Selena to a plethora of new cultures and ideas. Most importantly she learned more about the negative things that happened in society, things she wasn't aware of growing up in the agricultural district. Theft, murders, vandalism were nothing new to her, but she did find herself intrigued by white collar crime. People who made millions of lien through embezzlement, criminals who formed entire businesses around illegal activities. Con artists who would steal the shirt off of a mark and have them leave with a smile on their face. Selena found herself drawn to these sorts of things and began to drift away from her original goal of becoming a Huntress.

Selena began to dive into her studies when she realized that they could be used for things beyond their intended purposes. Her chemistry class taught her how to make poisons and dangerous compounds, history class taught her the mistakes famous criminals made in the past, math class gave her an important understanding of business mathematics. In her final year at Signal, Selena felt that the school had given her all that it could offer and decided to leave. Her brother Piers tried to persuade her to change her mind, but in the end she felt that he was too naive to understand her choice and left anyways. Selena disappeared into the city and began to put her new found skills to good use.

At first Selena started small, scamming people out of their pocket change with simple sleight of hand and clever tricks. As her confidence grew she began pursuing more complex schemes with bigger payoffs. Not everything she did was successful and it didn't take long before she began to draw the attention of law enforcement, but her skills and wits prevented her from being caught for anything too serious. In time she started earning enough money to support herself and live comfortably.

Personality: Selena is an egocentric narcissist, a fact that becomes abundantly clear to anyone that spends more then a few seconds with her. She believes that she is smarter, wittier, and just flat out better than anyone else. As far as Selena is concerned the world revolves around her, people exist for her to use as she fits, and nobody deserves anything as much as she does. Selena has never been particularly good at connecting with other people, something which furthers her ability to see others as disposable objects. It's not easy to shake the amount of confidence that Selena has in herself, but when it happens it can cause her to become a little unhinged in her pursuit of proving herself right again.

While most would not believe it, Selena does have a set of values and ethics that she follows. She is capable of respecting others who demonstrate exceptional skill, especially at things that she herself is not good at. After all, it wouldn't be wise to dispose of a tool if it's going to be useful to you long term. Even though she's effectively estranged herself from her family she still cares about them, enough that she intimidated people into turning down their acceptance into Beacon so that her brother would be able to attend with his less than stellar combat grades.

Strength: The staggering amount of confidence that Selena has in herself gives her a bizarre, almost foolish amount of courage when she faces adversity. She very rarely suffers self doubt, Selena feels that either she has the ability to directly confront a problem or the smarts to tackle it another way. Not counting what her ego leads her to believe, Selena benefits from actually being very intelligent. Years spent learning in school and overcoming problems at home have given her a sharp mind and an eye for detail. Being disconnected from people has also given Selena the opportunity to observe others and cultivate a fairly impressive talent for acting, which has become a necessary tool for her cons.

In combat Selena prefers to avoid direct confrontation and instead outmaneuver her opponents using tricks and cheap shots. If given the chance to strike first and undetected, she's good at taking out a foe with a single strike.

Weakness: Many of the things that makes Selena strong is also what makes her weak. While her confidence helps her avoid second guessing herself it also makes her over confident. She isn't perfect, much as she hates to admit it, so when she overestimates her ability to handle a situation it leads to a spectacular failure. It's a flaw Selena stubbornly rejects and fails to learn from time and time again. Her pride also makes her not respond well to being bested at something she's good at, it makes her irrational and single-minded in her attempt to reassert herself again. And while not being able to connect to anyone makes her a good actress, it has given her an almost psychological inability to see people as more than just tools.

In combat, Selena suffers from the fact that she spent more time learning to use her weapons and outwitting people to fully develop her aura. One of the main reasons why Selena focuses on outmaneuvering opponents and ending a battle before it starts is because she is not good at taking a hit. She's a decent fighter up until she is hit, her lack of skill at deflecting damage means she's easy to injury and incapacitate.

Semblance: Selena can use her semblance to turn herself and anything she's wearing invisible. Maintaining the effect is difficult to do while moving, making it so that she can't move any faster then a slow walk, fire her weapon, or perform any sudden movements without becoming visible again. While that does mean she could sneak up behind someone and turn visible right before she attacks, the ability of aura to detect incoming danger is usually enough to thwart such an attack. The invisibility can last for a while if Selena remains still the entire time but she can only maintain the effect while moving for a moment or so.

While the invisibility makes her completely undetectable by sight, it can be overcome through other means. She can still be heard or smelled, she can still be observed disturbing the area around her, and her body still emits heat. Selena cannot extend her invisibility to others.

WEAPON

Name: Dirge

Primary Form: A ten inch long ebony dirk that is bladed on one side and sharpened to a point.

Secondary Form: A black pistol with an elongated barrel. The extra barrel length functions as a highly effective suppressor and offers extra accuracy when firing. Dirge has a low rate of fire and only a ten bullet clip.

Name: Ruin

Primary Form: A ten inch long silver colored parrying dagger designed to be held in Selena's left hand in a reverse grip. It has less of a finer blade then Dirge does since it's meant to be used to block attacks, but it's sharpened to a finer point. It has a slot in the hilt where vials of poison can be placed so that they are injected with a successful stab.

Dust Techniques: With a fair bit of disposable income, Selena has taken to developing several uses for Dust. Her favorites are ones that help obscure the battlefield with either smoke or shadows. She can also use Dust through her knives to cause exceptional pain when she hits with them in order to incapacitate someone. The magical substance has found its way into her poison recipes as well in order to make them work faster and more effectively.

History: Selena designed her weapon when she attended Signal. Originally she only made Dirge but later on made Ruin when she lost interest in becoming a Huntress.

Seems solid enough. The Semblance incorporates its own weakness - extra kudos for pointing that out.

Approval got.
