Discussion on Migrating to a New Website Empty
PostSubject: Discussion on Migrating to a New Website   Discussion on Migrating to a New Website Icon_minitimeWed Feb 19, 2014 8:45 pm

Hey everyone. So, we've got a big decision here. This has been a topic on the mod radar for a while, but we haven't really discussed it in a big way until now. We are considering migrating out of Forumotion and to a website that we have complete control over, which would include some minor and major benefits. Here's what we're looking at.

Pros:
-Chatbox on every page, AND announcements!
-Greater control over the website in every way, compared to limited controls here(Applies mostly to admins, but can affect you as well since we can't offer things we, or you, may want to have.)
-The PG-13 rule may be changed in certain ways to allow for... well, stuff.
Cons:
-Difficulty transferring data from here to there.*

Note that this is a big, big deal. We don't want to do this if its going to hurt the website a lot. It will obviously be damaging somewhat, but if a large amount of people are on board, it can help immensely in the end. This is a discussion, please feel free to comment, question, or post concerns here.

*Data transferring is impossible because Forumotion technically "owns" all the data on the website, and have never given out the database for any site ever that I could find. What this means is that the data would have to remain on this website and be somewhat manually transferred. There are some options for this, but overall, the low priority data would likely not be brought over, such as everything in the basket.

Since forummotion owns everything would there be some kind of issue with characters? As in would it be considered stealing if we use them somewhere else?

If we actually transfer, we're gonna need a lot of volunteers to transfer data. Not just ten people, I mean a LOT. This thread is the 1449th thread made on this site. Imagine the amount of work we're gonna need to do. Sure, we can keep some things here and link to it from the other site, but we're gonna have to decide what stays and what transfers.  I say we transfer whatever is in the Creation area and any major plots, such as Autunno and Chesh's Wonderland, while we leave the minor ones, like the Water Park thread and everything that's non-canon, but this is most likely going to be a case by case basis.

Now, if we go to another forum, I think it's in our best interest to make sure it also has BBCode so we can simply highlight our posts in code form, then paste it over at where we're going.

No, they own the data, not the intellectual property. That's still ours.

This sounds like torture.

[18:18:57 19/02/14] @ Kooplah : The parts that might be more clearly let up is the vagueness around gore and torture. Its also possible we would have a non-PG13 forum, to keep everything separated.

I am okay with this, so long as the graphic violence is kept to a minimum.

Please for the love of god, do think about what you'll do with the PG-13 rating. There are so many sick people that have been turned away simply because OF the PG-13 rating. I don't want some new person's character to suddenly sprout the urge to show a visible, descriptive rape scene on some NON-PG-13 sub-forum just because we're going to be fair.

Aside from this, I have no issues with us having a move, I even voted yes. I just really want to make it clear, that if your going to make any changes, make them within reasonable boundaries so that I don't have to worry about some sick **** taking a bite out of my characters because he's a gentleman cannibal.

I am pretty sure that everyone would have to create a new account for security reasons, plus the fact that I'm not going to manually create an account for everyone, then assign it a simple password to give to the person on this website via PM so they can log in and change it.

Since we can't get the database there's no way to automatically transfer them that I know of. Vox may know more.

We will certainly not allow free reign of those kind of things. There will still be a PG-13 rule in place across the board, and then there MAY be a separate forum, similar to the flashback or non-canon forum, where those kinds of things COULD go. This is a potential option, not a promise that we will or will not have it.

I think we're gonna have to come up with something in order to ensure no one "steals" another user's character or impersonates another user.

It seems like we got a huge lead for the whole migrate|stay ratio. Should I make a preemptive "Whoever wants to help migrate" signups thread?

Well this is certainly an interesting proposition. I don't think it would be too difficult for us to be responsible for our own characters as far as moving over that information. As for creating new accounts, once again I don't see that to be a problem. I think this will also help the users list, as right now the last 4 pages are filled with zero-post accounts. My one concern would be the PG-13 rating rule change potentially attracting or encouraging the wrong type of stuff. Something else to look at would be the threads happening that might be caught in the middle of the switch, and how to deal with those.

If it's been decided yet, what is the planned website that we'd be migrating to?

Just gonna toss in my two cents. This seems like a good idea in the long run but will most certainly be a pain.

Indeed, and we've been lazy about putting it off a little, but the longer we wait the worse it'll be.

This is being researched heavily by Vox, but we don't have a certain home yet.

In the interests of more customization and control over the website, I've voted yes. I do share the same concerns though as Wrecker, Kawazoe, and Dakir have brought up around the adjustment of the PG-13 rating. However, if it's within "tasteful" means and for the better of writing for the community, I don't see it as a deal breaker in my book as long as there are some lines drawn in the sand about how far is too far.

The change won't be major. It will likely be refinements to the current system so that the borders are a little more clear with things. Its not something we couldn't do here. The fade to black thing will be remaining, and things of a questionable nature such as rape will still be banned to a point. The goal will be to attempt to lift restrictions on people's writing, without portraying anything that people really don't want to see or read. Especially when it comes to the younger audience, because we do have quite a very large amount of younger players here. That said, the details are being worked on, and everyone's input will be taken into consideration.

Sounds like a good idea - a lot of suggestions for the forums have been turned down just because it's not possible with this site!

Though... Would we get to keep our post counts (Have them edited in I guess?), just a little thing but it would make losing the posts and stuff more tolerable

We could assign each account on here a number or phrase or something similar which only the account holder will know, then when the new account is made on the new site we could verify it against the number/phrase thing to check if it's really them.

I believe that changing sites would be a good idea, it will take time and effort now, but in the long run, things will be simpler and easier meaning it will pay off. Also, if we wait longer due to people worrying about the effort of site changing, then more effort will be needed in moving sites eventually.

For ideas about what site to change to, we always have wikis. The wiki page can be the thread location and the characters RP in the comments section for that page. I used to be part of a Harry Potter roleplay wiki site, this worked quite well, we even had personalized text boxes for comments which you could change depending on the character.

Also, I enjoy... "stuff".
