The Great Plains Empty
PostSubject: The Great Plains   The Great Plains Icon_minitimeSat Apr 12, 2014 11:26 pm

The Great Plains
Also Known as The Windfury Flats
Located east of Vale, The Great Plains spans over a huge amount of area as the name implies. A serpentine river spanning 25 feet (7.6 meters) runs from the north and curves to the west as it approaches the southern border. Besides this, there are some ponds of various sizes strewn across the land. Besides these bodies of water, the main body of the plains of more or less featureless. The soil is inhabited mostly by various grasses, flowers, shrubbery, and the occasional tree. Because there is not much to block the western wind, there is more often than not at least a breeze running across the ground. Combined with rain or snow, traversing across the plains can be difficult and dangerous. For two seasons (half of spring and fall, summer), it also becomes susceptible to tornadoes, but seeing as it is barely inhabited, damage is kept to a minimum.

In the very northeastern corner of the area is plagued by various species of Grimm and, as such, only small pockets of humanity reside within it. It is also in this corner that the plains meet a mountain range which extends to roughly half of the northern border. East, meeting the plains and the mountain range, is a thick forest which creeps along the majority of the plain's eastern border.

List of Grimm:

The Eastern Bastion
Common Known as Theba
Population: ~15,000
Leader: Mayor Alton White
Description
Located 720 miles (~1160 kilometers) directly east of Vale, The Eastern Bastion serves as an economic center for the surrounding villages. Because of its location and importance, a good portion of those who are of working age are employed as guards, and some folks from surrounding areas join them as well since Theba's safety also means safety for their home villages. Due to the lack of wood and stone, most of the buildings in Theba are made from baked clay bricks giving the town a solid orange-red color. Around the perimeter of the town is a fortress-like stone wall standing at 10 feet.

The train station connecting Theba to Vale lies on the western edge of town. The building itself was once an unused church that had been renovated for just this sake and it is the one of the only buildings to be made of stone. The building, thankfully, is quite large and, as such, was able to hold enough platforms for four trains which meant that a train was able to depart from each city roughly every 12 hours: one in the morning and one in the evening. The trains themselves take about 10-11 hours to travel between Theba and Vale. High upon the walls near the ceiling are several stain-glassed windows which gives the place a rather surreal atmosphere. It is known as a blessing for those who have arrived after their arduous journeys. At the peak of its tower is a bell that is rang 1 time for an arrival and 3 times before a departure.

Settled near the train station is the mayor's office. It is similar to that of every other building in the town save for a rather large imprint of the town logo above the door as well as the phrase "Prosperity Through Unity". The mayor does not actually reside here as there is an election every couple of years and everyone deemed it would be a pain to have to move furniture around. The building stands at 3 stories, the first being the reception area, the second being a small assembly/meeting area, and the third being the mayor's office area.

For the sake of convenience, the bazaar and native shops are located in the center of town, the bazaar being directly in the center and the native shops on the outskirts of it. It is here where merchants from the various surrounding villages sell their wares, and it is here that those villages also pick up essentials that they would not otherwise have. Due to the importance of the area, the security around the area is tight and any commotion is taken care of swiftly. The entire area is known as the market district.

Slightly north of the market district is the town hall, though, despite a rather official name, it is not usually used for "political" matters considering most matters do not require the audience of most of the town. Instead, it serves as a building with multiple utilities such as storm shelter, party/dinner hall, concert/recreational area, etc.

South of market district stands the hospital at five stories (six including the basement). Aesthetically, there is nothing unique about it; it is pretty average-looking. Inside, there are roughly 180 patient rooms, 45 on the first 2 and last 2 floors. The 3rd floor is reserved for equipment and faculty offices and such. The basement of the hospital is filled with sandbags for the rarely-occurring flood and other things for various other emergencies.

In the eastern part of town is a clearing that has been officially designated as a park. At the center is a large pond or a small lake depending on how one wants to view it. It is here where outdoor, recreational events are usually held.

Unique Holidays/Events
Vale Appreciation Week/Day AKA V.A. Week/Day (30th day of the 8th month): Being the largest event of the year, even inhabitants of all neighboring towns come to join the celebration. During the week of occurrence, lights are put up all throughout the city and discounts are given for good and celebratory items. On this day, a parade, a feast, and various recreational activities are held in honor of the completion of the rail system between Theba and Vale.

Phoumi
Home of Mao Visorith
Population: ~700
Leader: Guards-Captain Sovanara Visorith
Description
The village of Phoumi is located about 380 miles northeast of Thebes. It sits nears the corner where the mountain range meets the forest; it is just 5 miles away from each. Around the perimeter of the village is a wall of logs thanks to the (relatively) nearby forest. In the southwest, north, and east regions of the wall are thick wooden gates. The village itself is rather small but, thanks to Theba and thus Vale, it is able to also have a village and a stable for horses.
Guards
The Guard Unit is split into the Advanced Guard and Reserved Guard. A majority of the working population is part of the Guards Unit, and a majority of them reside in the Reserved Guard. Those of the Reserved Guard are cycled into duty and are usually assigned to minor positions such as watching the perimeter as well as manning the gates. The Advanced Guard is comprised of full-time guardsmen. Thanks to the Reserve Guard, they are able to rest and train while nothing is going on. As a result, the Advanced Guard is the primary source of defense against Grimm. They are also the ones to accompany caravans coming to (if the guards are at Theba) and from Phoumi. Within the Advanced Guard is the Elite Guard, commonly known as The Phoumi Elite to outsiders. Shorthand, they are known as P.E.G. for Phoumi Elite Guard. The Guards-Captain is belongs to this group and occasionally leads it independently from the Advanced Guard. The Elite Guard's main duties are taking care of high-priority objectives which can include the elimination of above-average Grimm and partaking in the escorting of V.I.P's alongside the Advanced Guard. Currently, the Elite Guard consists of 8 members excluding the Guards-Captain. Members are handpicked by the Guards-Captain based on their performance during Seh and Sangvien.

Unique Holidays/Events
Seh(Horse) [9th day of the 7th month]: 6 days prior to the day, the guardsmen clear out as many Grimm as possible around the village. With that done, this day is dedicated to horsemanship with participants either racing one another or going through obstacle courses and such. It is also during this race where Advanced Guardsmen can have their horsemanship skills judged by the Guards-Captain. This event stems off the village wanting to show of the beauty of their horses. As a token of appreciation, the next 6 days after the event is dedicated to allowing the horses to be lazy. During these 6 days, the people of the village do all the work. If a horse is absolutely required for a task, then the task is simply not done until the event is over, no exceptions.

Sangvien(Arena) [30th day of the 7th month]: On this day, a tournament is held for anyone who wishes to participate including outsiders. The tournament is known to outsiders though, due to how far the village actually is, only a few foreigners participate in the festivities. Elite Guardsmen, excluding the Guards-Captain, are seeded into the quarter-finals. It is also during this tournament that Advanced Guardsmen are judged by the Guards-Captain. Because of the difficulty of the tournament, the Guards-Captain bestows upon the winner the title of Chiahseh(Knight) which is known across the Great Plains as a symbol of skill. After being given the title, the winner is given the option to challenge the him or her as well if they so desire. Due to observation's and safety's sake, this is the only time the Guards-Captain participates in an official fight. If they decline, then the tournament is officially over. If they accept, the fight can commence at whatever time the challenger wishes as long as it is of the same day. Either way, festivities run to midnight.

While I'm not a mod or even a long-time member or anything, I did want to say that this looks very well thought out. Well done, sir/ma'am/honorific-of-your-choice!
